The masseter (also masseter muscle, latin: musculus masseter) is a masticatory muscle that elevates the lower jaw.
The masseter originates from the zygomatic arch and inserts into the masseteric tuberosity of the mandible. The masseter muscle is thick and quadrangular in shape.
Contractions of the masseter muscles elevate the mandible.
The masseter is innervated by the masseteric nerve, a branch of the mandibular division of the trigeminal nerve (CN V3).
