The patella (also known as the kneecap, latin: patella) is a flat triangular movable bone at the front of the knee. The patella is embedded in the quadriceps tendon.
The patella has three main parts:
- base of patella,
- apex of patella,
- articular surface of patella.
The base of the patella is the broad, superior border of the patella.
The apex of the patella is the pointed, inferior border of the patella.
The articular surface of the patella is the cartilage-covered surface of the patella facing the femur for articulation with the patellar surface of the femur.
