Sternothyroid

  • The sternothyroid (also sternothyroid muscle, latin: musculus sternothyroideus) is a muscle belonging to the infrahyoid neck muscles that extends between the sternum and the thyroid cartilage.

The sternothyroid originates from the manubrium of the sternum and inserts on the thyroid cartilage of the larynx.

Upon contraction the sternothyroid muscle depresses the thyroid cartilage.

The sternothyroid is innervated by the anterior rami of the 1st to 3rd cervical spinal nerves (C1 - C3) via the ansa cervicalis of the cervical plexus.
