Vastus intermedius

  • The vastus intermedius (also vastus intermedius muscle, latin: musculus vastus intermedius) is one of the muscles forming the quadriceps femoris. The vastus intermedius is located in the anterior region of the thigh below the rectus femoris and between the vastus medialis and lateralis.

The vastus intermedius originates from the upper two-thirds of the anterior surface of the femur. The vastus intermedius inserts along with the other muscles of the quadriceps femoris onto the tibial tuberosity.

The main function of the vastus intermedius is extension of the knee.
